9th HIV & AIDS Discussion - HIV Prevention Program on Mining Industry
Company-Community Partnerships for Health in Indonesia (CCPHI), held the 9th HIV & AIDS discussion in National AIDS Commission (NAC) on March 28, 2013. The meeting discussed the HIV prevention program on Mining Industry with presenters from PT. Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and PT. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). The meeting was attended by 39 participants from 4 companies, 1 medical service, 9 NGOs, 3 education institutions, 1 association and 2 governments agencies.
KPC (www.kpc.co.id) is a coal company operating in East Kutai, East Kalimantan. While PTFI is a multinational mining company that produces concentrates containing copper, gold, and silver in Mimika, Papua.
Haryadi Wardono - Occupational Health & SafetyManagerof Kaltim Prima Coal presented the company's HIV prevention activities both for the employees and communities around KPC operation from 2010 until 2013 such as peer educator trainings, distribution of educational materials for employees and community, and also incorporated HIV prevention materials as part of company's Ocupational Health & Safety policy.
Second presenter was Benny Angkus, Community Public Health & Malaria Control Department (CPHMC) officer of PT. Freeport Indonesia/PTFI (www.ptfi.co.id) explaining about HIV prevention program managed by CPHMC- PTFI. Benny mentioned that 98% of HIV cases in Papua is caused by sexual contact, so they develop a strategy focusing on interpersonal communication.
