Press News: Society and Government Must Team Up Against TB
CCPHI-IDN
Jakarta, January 16, 2018 — The TB campaign in all regions of Indonesia needs to be carried out continuously so that the target for TB elimination in 2030 can be achieved. The burden of overcoming this infectious disease is considered to be very large. Moreover, Indonesia is the second country in the number of TB cases in the world after India. The government and its staff from the center to the regions need to work together with people from all walks of life, including the mass media and the industrial sector, to unite to gang up on TB to the end.
This is the common thread that surfaced in mass media discussions with the topic of socializing the national campaign to eradicate TB during 2018 with the theme "Peduli We Care for TBC" which was held by the Stop TB Partnership Indonesia (FSTPI) Forum at PPTI Headquarters, Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, Tuesday ( 16/1/2018).
“This TB disease is an old disease that occurs almost all over the world and its treatment is not simple. For that we feel we need to talk about what we can do. First, because TB disease has been around for a long time, many people think this disease is over. Second, because there are still many found in Indonesia with the status of being ranked second, it is always the government that is seen. The government is seen as the party responsible. However, in my opinion, all communities should be involved in it. Let's discuss what we can do. The government and the community need to gang up on TB," said Arifin Panigoro, General Chair of the FSTPI.
According to Arifin, if China with the largest population is proven to be free from TB and also South Africa, which is now in a better position than Indonesia, Indonesia should also be able to. He stressed that it was necessary to convey to every Indonesian family so that if a member of their family was infected with TB, it was not necessary to cover it up because it was actually dangerous.
"Immediately report to the puskesmas and undergo treatment and all other family members need to be evaluated and checked," said Arifin.
Arifin also said that the mass media played a very important role in disseminating information related to TB. Especially through young people who are very close to gadgets or the digital world, it is hoped that they can be a messenger to other people.
“Our challenge is the geographical extent of Indonesia. The government is currently focusing on the West. We can imagine how the condition of TB in the eastern part of Indonesia. Conditions in Papua, for example, where the environment and place to live are far from adequate,” he said.
In her presentation, FSTPI Executive Secretary Mariani Reksoprodjo said that FSTPI in FSTPI's role as a facilitator continues to work closely with all parties to disseminate information related to TB to the Indonesian people.
“Various counseling is carried out with preventive and promotive principles. It should be conveyed to the public that TB is not a hereditary disease, because of witchcraft, or a curse. TB disease must be treated immediately and will definitely recover as long as the treatment is correct and never stops medication, "said Mariani.
Campaign Format
The target of the national TB campaign carried out by FSTPI, namely the millennial generation in the age range of 15-30 years. The campaign format is in the form of videos that are viral through various social media platforms.
“Milineals are considered necessary to be the target of the campaign because this group is familiar with the use of gadgets and is very active on social media. Through this campaign, it is hoped that information related to TB can be known by millennials, especially their peers and their families," said Gaby, a member of the FSTPI TBC national campaign steering committee.
He explained that in this national TBC campaign, FSTPI collaborated with several public figures, including Reza Rahardian and Dona Agnesia as well as several mural artists. This public figure who has many followers on social media is expected to be a disseminator of information and make the people who follow them care about TB.
Artist Dona Agnesia who was present in the media discussion explained her reasons for being interested in this TB campaign. “One of my nephews has had tuberculosis. I was interested in being involved because I wanted to know more about this infectious disease. After getting the information here, I was surprised too, it turns out that there are so many TB cases in our country,” said Dona.
Mariani added, the campaign carried out by FSTPI throughout 2018 will also invite every stakeholder, both from industry, ministries/agencies. "We hope this campaign can touch all levels of society down to the RT," he said.
On that occasion, a drug-resistant TB (TBRO) survivor, Ully Uliyah, testified that she underwent treatment from the time she was sentenced until she recovered. Ully contracted tuberculosis at the age of 10 and was declared cured in 2011. He got TBRO because he had dropped out of treatment. “At that time, when my mother asked me if I had taken medication, I said I had. In fact, I threw the drug away. In the end, I got drug-resistant TB,” he said.
Now Ully is actively campaigning for TB on social media. He is also active in the organization of former drug-resistant TB patients, namely Pejuang Tangguh (Peta). “I hope today's patients do not experience the same as in my past. I always campaign about tuberculosis so that the people around me don't suffer like me,” he said.
Dr. dr. Erlina Burhan, MSc, SpP (K), a pulmonologist from Persahabatan Hospital, explained about TB. “Generally, TB treatment patients think that in the first two months they feel healed, so they stop taking the medicine. This is dangerous. This will give rise to TBRO. For that, what we need to pay attention to is how to prevent TB from being infected to us," he said.
He reminded that achieving TB-free Indonesia by 2050 requires extraordinary efforts. The Ministry of Health, of course, cannot just work as is or business as usual. All contacts of TB patients, said Erlina, must be examined and evaluated. He also hopes that there will be efforts to find TB patients by screening (screening) in public places, such as on public transportation.
"One of the efforts and manifestations of concern for eradicating TB is to get used to wearing masks. Especially those who suffer from coughs, everywhere, especially in air-conditioned (AC) rooms, must wear a mask," he said.
Yes, #PeduliKitaPeduliTBC! The screams of the participants while clenching their fists in the air marked the end of the discussion on the socialization of the national TBC campaign.
