Partnership Dialogue # 8: The Role of Higher Education Institutions and Local Governments in Building Regions
The Partnership Dialogue #8 was held on Tuesday, 25th September 2018, with the topic: "The Role of Higher Education Institutions and Local Governments in Building Regions" at Paramadina Graduate School, Gedung Tempo, South Jakarta. The Dialogue presented speakers from representative of the Local Government of Pangandaran District, historian, and communication expert.
The Partnership Dialogue #8 discussed the development of the Pangandaran District Government which includes education, health, infrastructure and tourism, delivered by Dr. H. M. Agus Nurdin, M.Pd., Secretary of the District Education Office Pangandaran. Asep Khambali as a historian then explained about the important role of history and culture in shaping the tourism sector in Indonesia. Rendra Almatsier as the CEO of Impro Visual Storyteller then completed the discussion with an explanation of the importance of the role of branding and identity in shaping cities and tourism.
The opportunity was also utilized by the participants to discuss challenges in promoting the region uniqueness of attractions, for example Pangandaran. The common problems include inadequate road access or infrastructure, complicated bureaucracy, and limited well-trained human resources. In terms of marketing and communication, Rendra Almatsier then added that there were still many local government representatives who did not understand the importance of making appealing narratives while building branding or image of an area to promote the attractions of a region, especially in the tourism sector.
The Partnership's dialogue concluded that strong partnerships are needed by local governments, universities, and the private sector in shaping the city and promoting the regional tourism. For this reason, the process of building trust and communication among various parties is deemed very important in order to achieve a well-targeted partnership form.
